The Silent Ballet wrote a few words on ‘Moments’ here.

Ben Woods is among a growing collection of musicians who are releasing their music for free and, as free music goes, this is great. The sounds on Moments are very fragile; Woods creates soundscapes, which according to netlabel Wise Owl, exist “to audibly represent recent emotions and feelings with regard to situation, experience and circumstance.” This music has been created during his time at university and would certainly help his fellow students to relax and tune out of their studies.

The songs all contain a similar tone which is very light and fragile, almost lacking in bite. Opener “After the Wind” is a piano led track which rings out beautifully with every note hit. Some background keyboard work slowly fades into the song and takes the center role as the piano falls away. The sounds drift through the audience and evoke different feelings and emotions. Although this music seems to lack something in its fragility, it is still very powerful.

Ben Woods is not creating a new sound and there are a lot of artists out there creating similar music. It would be apparent to anyone familiar with this particular sound that a heavy influence on this work must have come from artists such as Eluvium. This is not to discredit Moments, however, as all the songs include fantastic musicianship. It is obvious that a lot of time has been spent crafting these songs slowly and with real passion.

For such passion and commitment to be released free into the world illuminates the character of the musician. These songs are for many moments – when you have had a crap/terrible/uninspiring day at work, when the noises of the world just won’t let you sleep, when you’re hung over; these songs are the perfect complement to a whole range of different emotions. This is a perfect album for closing out the world.
